To those interested in the subject...

Read the following article at Space.com:

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/091111-sun-star-planets.html

Essentially it's talking about the observed relationship between stellar lithium content and the existence of planetary systems.

If you're interested, please read it.... and then give me a reality check! )

It's only been 6 months....

The White List

This is a very small update that ended up being mostly deletions. I'll try to get another update next month that includes a number of authors feeds that I've created over the last few months.

If you have any updates you want added to the list, please post at the entry above NOT HERE.

Thanks.

A flyer in today's e-mail:

"Bright House Networks is proud to announce that it's 2010 Star Teacher Awards Program has officially kicked off!"

Sorry, but if a company can't tell "its" from "it's," I'm not sure if I can trust them to be a judge of excellence in education. Or perhaps "excellents" in education?

I have a question for those of you who are a part of academia. Which of the following do you prefer:

Jones et al.
Jones and others
Jones and colleagues

Does your answer vary depending on the location of the phrase — in-text reference rather than contained in a footnote, endnote, or reference list?

CMS allows "et al." along with "and others" but I have been seeing more and more of "and colleagues" lately.

Maybe I'm just an old stick in the mud.

I was wondering why this writer chose to focus on the smell of dead bodies as his angle on an ongoing multiple murder investigation. But then I saw what's so interesting about the 'stench' surrounding the suspect's house: it's 'odourless'. In fact, 'odourless' is a noun in all of its occurrences in this article.

To be fair, many words commonly used as nouns started their careers as modifying adjectives in noun phrases: binocular (spyglasses), bifocal (glasses), etc. I guess I just never heard this one before.

Or maybe someone's too subservient to their spellchecker or autofill, and has a lazy editor, or no editor.

First off, thanks to everyone that replied to my post about hair cutters. Very helpful!

That said, I have another question: what are the best vegan meals in town? My husband and I are trying out a vegan or close to vegan diet for a while (damn China Study book!) and are looking for stuff to try -- especially since he's been very much a carnivore up till now.

We've already tried Satchel's, Karma Cream, and Book's Inc., though we're open to other recommendations there -- despite the fact that the stuff we tried at all three places was AWESOME! If you're curious, at Satchel's we had vegan cheese pizza with banana peppers, spinach, basil, garlic, and carrots; at Karma Cream we had triple chocolate, cookie dough, and green tea ice cream; and at Book's Inc. we had carrot cake and a chocolate cupcake. Yeah, I know, not the healthiest vegan diet yet but it's transitional right now. And I've also eaten some great vegan meals at SaBaBa, too, even when I wasn't really trying to eat vegan.

Knowing what restaurants have a good selection of vegan options would be great, but I'd also be interested in good vegan meals at restaurants that aren't really known for being vegan-friendly (even if they include off the menu options).

And if you want to share any recipes to try at home, that'd be much appreciated, too!

Does Ward's or anywhere else in town sell Fair Trade chocolate? I can call tomorrow, I know, but I would like to know now! Thanks :)
